What is the purpose of a bespoke pallet?
Pallets are used in shipping to make exporting many items or a heavy load easier. They protect the product and absorb the stresses when the items are being lifted or moved. Pallets will hold the weight of the items being shipped, encounter forklift impacts and safeguard any goods travelling through the supply chain.
A bespoke pallet will be manufactured to the specific requirements of the objects being shipped. Typically, you will have a bespoke wooden pallet that can be designed and made to any specification to support loads varying in size and weight distribution. The standard pallet size in the UK is 1200 x 1000mm these will be made in different ways with different wood to determine how much weight they can carry.

Do pallets have to be heat treated?
If you are exporting your products and need pallets for this process, heat treatment on wooden pallets is required to comply with ISPM15. This is to help prevent any transfer of pesticides and infestation during the long or short exportation process. Having heat-treated wooden pallets also means they are more durable and can withstand extensive pallet use better than an untreated pallet.

- Nails and fasteners used could cause damage to the product or the user
- Break easier than plastic

Plastic Pallet Advantages
- Cleaner: often used for fresh/frozen food and pharmaceutical industries with stricter hygiene requirements
- No worry of mould or bugs
- Easy to clean and sterilise
- More durable and weather resistant (up to a point)
- Re-usable
- Lighter: meaning easier to handle and store
Plastic Pallet Disadvantages
- Cost! They are generally 3 times more than wooden pallets.
- Cannot be repaired if damaged
- Can’t recycle have to be melted down as they are made from oil
- Not eco-friendly
- Smooth and slippery making storage difficult
- Generally, only come in a standard size so no custom pallets unless you’re willing to pay out a large sum!
Bespoke Pallet Solutions
