Military packaging must meet the Military of Defence criteria, this is to ensure that the design and the production of the packaging are compliant with the defence requirements for transportation, handling and storage in the military supply chain. The Military of Defence set up the Military Packager Accreditation Scheme (MPAS) to ensure that any company contracted to manufacture and pack military items meets these standards. MPAS-accredited companies will be given a Service Packaging Instruction Sheet (SPIS), which will give guidelines on how to clean, maintain and pack military products.
MPAS: Military Packaging Levels
There are three different levels of MPAS, these are J, N and P. These levels are to ensure a higher performance level of packaging based on the movement, distribution, handling, and storage of the items. The costs of military packaging are generally higher due to the defence standards on materials, this cost will also depend on which of these levels the packaging needs to adhere to (J, N or P).
J: For those items which could be stored for up to two years anywhere in the world. So, all climate conditions must be kept in mind.
N: Items that might be stored for up to five years in a frost-free building and dry conditions anywhere in the world.
P: Items that will be stored in normal conditions for up to five years. Generally, these will be in packaging like commercial packaging.
The Ministry of Defence guidelines also state that any military packaging should be designed in the mindset that it may need to be reused. This is to minimise the impact of packaging waste on the environment; however, this cannot always be possible with some of the intricate military products.
